During my internship I challenged myself to pursue two jobs at the same time.
Its just that one day when my employer in my internship company told us about this 10 bucks lunch set at that Italian ice cream shop just 2 floors below.
Since Sri Hartamas is a high society place ( what more publika ) we were attracted to it and went to order our lagsana set. What I didnt expect is to be more into it by starting work right at the very next day.
I was hired as a part timer with a rather high pay ( similar to the coffee shop I used to work) but then Im offered with a staff meal as well. Im also encouraged to serve the chinese customers with mandarin language. I felt extremely happy when I was told that I got the job due to my proficiency in mandarin and my previous job experience! Ting ting!
My job scope there is to serve the customers by giving them suggestions and scouping ice creams. My eyes widen when I saw the intructions that we are required to be <familiar> with the flavours and we are free to try out the ice creams available. What a way to cure my sweet tooth and thin wallet. #hehe
Besides being on the service line, im also being educated on how gelato ice creams work. Their differences with american ice creams and how are we are suppose to preserve them. It enquires alot of work to wrap them every night and transport the tubs to the freezer every night. Our priority in preserving the ice cream is to ensure its not contaminated with other flavours, dry and stored in the correct temperature. For sorbet and yoghurt its even chiller. This is how I know how gelato ice cream could be such an quality ice cream: the preservative process.
Anyways, there were also generic menus such as crepes, waffles, coffee and so on. Gelatomio on the rock which is the shops signature is basically something where you add two flavours and mix it out into a new flavour on the cold stone. I had learnt how to make it. Its really difficult because the ice cream melts so easily and we must be familiar with the flavours to fusion a great new taste. My favorite pick and flavour so far would be banana cream and yam coconut.
The colleagues here are awesome, friends from Nepal. My malay colleague that works double jobs as well. The neverending converasations and patience they have to teach me all of the menu and work scopes.
My bosses are 2 sisters that are really kind and nice. They always care about our welfare by buying us food and fetching me home. Im really priviledge to work for them. In the future, I will surely come back and visit them.
Even though some customers would be rather rude or look down on my position as a part timer. Looking at the bright side, I got to know people from different walks of life and damn those yummy gelato ice creams that is truly unforgettable. Those bad encounters I would just accept it as a way to mould me.
Its a good exposure as 20 to 30 years old is the golden timing of learning opportunities. I may fall sick at times and felt dead weary after 16 hours of work a day. In the end, the results are worth it. I gained friendship, experience, joy and knowledge. Not to mention the pay that could be a good use in my Korea trip soon.
